Video – Many Plain and Precious Things – A video explaining the importance of the Joseph Smith translation of the bible. (4:32 minutes)
Video – Joseph Smith Papers: Nathan Waite and Edward Partridge – Nathan Waite, an editor on the Joseph Smith Papers project, says that the history of Edward Partridge includes stories familiar to Latter-day Saints, but also includes a story about the trial and near murder of church leaders when news of a gunfight reaches the courthouse. Video – Newel K. Whitney Store Trading Room: The First Bishop’s Storehouse, Kirtland, Ohio – In the early 1820’s, Newel K. Whitney settled at the Kirtland Flats, and originally built a small store, painted red, on the northwest corner of the town’s major intersection. He later built a larger store, which has been restored today. In Doctrine and Covenants 72, Newel K. Whitney was called as a Bishop, and the trading room in his store became a forerunner to the Bishops’ Storehouses, that provide commodities for the poor and needy as part of the welfare system in the Church today. Activity – Scripture Figures: The First Bishop – Use these to tell the story of Edward Partridge.
Activity/Article – A Day with the Bishop – Explains some of the things a bishop does. Includes an activity.
Audio – The First Bishops of the Church – A Primary teacher and children learn about the first bishops and the laws of the Church. Edward Partridge and Sidney Rigdon are called as the first two bishops of the Church. Around the same time, members are given commandments to follow, including the Ten Commandments.
Audio – Joseph Smith and Sidney Rigdon – A Primary teacher and children learn of how Joseph Smith and Sidney Rigdon learn of Zion. Oliver Cowdery meets and baptizes Sidney Rigdon. Sidney is then called to help Joseph Smith fix parts of the Bible that have been changed.
